Start-up of the week: Vegan shoemakers step into Hackney Road
PUBLISHED: 13:54 22 September 2016
The Gazette hunts high and low each week to bring you news of the most interesting and unusual new businesses in Hackney. This week we meet vegan shoemakers Friendship Shoes.
A vegan shoemaker’s has marked its launch with an endorsement from the world’s top animal rights charity.
Friendship Shoes recently got the nod of approval from Peta for its products, which are made from imported Italian fabric and knocked together in the shoe-making Mecca Northampton (hence the £150-plus cost).
The company was launched by Caroline Black and her partner, retired recording engineer Steven Honest, who recently had his latest platinum disc for work with One Direction delivered to the Hackney Road store.
The aim is to make high quality vegan shoes and the pair have given five British classics a “quirky twist”.
Steven said: “The environment really needs us to change the way we live on the planet and we’re supporting a huge change in thinking.”
