A fireman who posed as a cop to take a £20 bottle of whisky from a pub landlord was found guilty of fraud.

The fireman had allegedly told George Hole from the Fountain in Finsbury that he was a police officer from City Road, and that he wanted to “take some bottles of spirits” to show his sergeant.

Later he asked Mr Hole to lend him some money which he promised to pay back that night. But after a week Mr Hole became suspicious and called police, who traced the fireman to Stoke Newington station. He admitted it was him and “blamed it on the drink”.

He said: “It started a long time ago when people used to think I was the law because of my black trousers, blue shirt and black tie. Can’t I pay the money back now?”

He had a previous conviction for stealing milk and was fined £20 or face three months in jail.
