Women dressed as suffragettes, wearing purple sashes, and carrying slogans urging people to ‘make your voice heard’, descended on the Town Hall, calling on the community to register to vote in the European Union (EU) referendum before the deadline.
The campaigners from community group, HOPE Not Hate, carried out the stunt to launch a week of action in the run up to the “biggest vote for a generation” on June 23, when UK citizens will decide whether Britain should leave or remain in the EU.
Anyone who does not already have a polling card for the EU referendum must to register to participate, and the deadline is Tuesday June 7.
Jemma Levene from HOPE not hate said: “Everyone in Hackney will have an opinion about whether we remain or leave the EU, but if you are not on the register, your views will not be heard, there are literally just a few days left to get registered.”
