Sweeping changes to the centre of Hackney have been revealed in a new “masterplan” published today by the town hall.

The council has drawn up proposals to build 1,000 homes, create 3,000 jobs and supply 45,000 square metres of workspace and shops in the areas around Mare Street.

The draft document sets out guidelines for all future developments in the area and pinpoints sites for potential work.

Some of the biggest talking points include relocating Clapton Bus Garage and developing the Tesco site in Morning Lane.

A bigger public square at the Narrow Way and a link between the two sites from the St John-at-Hackney Church gardens through the railway arches could also be on the way.

Other proposals include improving Hackney Central Overground station, flattening and relocating the Hackney Housing depot in Florfield Road and refurbishing the London College of Fashion site.

Half of all housing and 10 per cent of any workspace built will need to be affordable in line with the town hall’s policies.

The draft adds more detail to the existing planning document for the area in an aim to avoid piecemeal developments.

Hackney’s planning boss Cllr Guy Nicholson said: “Hackney Central is a thriving town centre; a hub for civic and cultural facilities and activities alongside an increasing demand for employment space for both making and selling.

“This draft presents a number of proposals that will help meet the demand for more space in our town centre whilst complimenting the character of the area.

“The plan aims to describe in detail what could happen at a number of large sites in the town centre and add to Hackney’s reputation as a place to live and work in.”

He also urged people to share their thoughts, saying: “Your feedback will inform and shape a version of this plan that will be adopted, spelling out to developers and landowners what we, the community, would like to see in Hackney Central, avoiding a piecemeal approach to future development.”
