The left-back will not be fit enough to start Wednesday’s Champions League round of 16 first leg

Tottenham Hotspur will have to reshuffle their defence for the visit of German giants Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday evening (8pm kick-off).

Already without Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Ben Davies, full-back Danny Rose has now joined the injury list again.

He suffered a gashed shin during Sunday’s 3-1 win over Leicester City in the Premier League and needs to be assessed to see if he is fit enough to be on the bench.

Boss Mauricio Pochettino has already ruled Rose out of a place in the starting XI, however, which leaves him with a selection headache for the Champions League round of 16 first leg.

For the recent league success over Newcastle United, Jan Vertonghen played left-back and he could perform the same role this week against the Bundesliga leaders.

The Belgian has plenty of experience playing in this position, having done so several times for his country, but it is an unwanted problem for Spurs.

Aside from Vertonghen, traditional right-backs Serge Aurier or Kyle Walker-Peters will be in contention or Pochettino may try something out of the ordinary.

Elsewhere, Kane (ankle), Alli (hamstring) and Davies (groin) continue rehabilitation, but are unavailable for this encounter at Wembley Stadium.

Vincent Janssen, who recently picked up a knee injury, is also not selectable because he wasn’t included in Tottenham’s Champions League squad for the knock-out phase.

There is better news on Eric Dier and Erik Lamela, though, who both sat out Sunday’s victory over Leicester.

Dier is fit again after a virus while Lamela’s minor back injury is an issue of the past and the Argentinian will hope to start against Dortmund.

Lucas Moura is another who will be raring to go, but youngster Oliver Skipp is likely to be on the bench despite starting against the Foxes last weekend.
