Transport chiefs have agreed to install extra signage about banned left turns into Richmond Road from Mare Street – after one unaware driver got six tickets.

Vehicles can no longer turn left into the road between 7am and 10am and 3pm and 7pm from Monday to Saturday due to the introduction of a school street outside London Fields Primary School in Westgate Street.

But drivers have complained the measure was brought in by “stealth” and say the signs aren’t visible.

Derek Rochester, who runs maintenance at Space in Mare Street, received six fines before he realised. He said: “Many people are travelling to work in the morning and use that through route going west.

“There were other road closures around where they put up big yellow boards beforehand, but with this one, no signs were put up whatsoever.

“The signs that are there are fairly high up and one is right on the corner. I’ve been doing this route for 10 years and you have to come into the inside lane. You’ve got to keep an eye on the bus lane and watch our for cyclists and taxis. It’s easy to miss them.”

School Streets are brought in to improve air quality and make it easier for families to walk and cycle to and from school.

But Derek said he can’t understand how making vehicles go around the houses will do much for the pollution levels in the borough.

“I’ve got workers in trucks having to go up Graham Road and back into Richmond Road to get to our building. How is that going to help?”

Deputy mayor and transport chief Cllr Feryal Demirci said: “The changes to this junction are part of our pioneering school streets initiative which is improving air quality and making it easier for families to walk and cycle to and from school.

“While the notices already meet all Department for Transport requirements, we will shortly be adding additional signage to ensure all drivers comply and help make our children’s school journeys safer and healthier”.
