There was a time when the people dishing up school dinners would not have been top of a pupil’s “thank you” list.

But times have changed, and youngsters from special needs school Side by Side in Big Hill, Upper Clapton have this week taken the opportunity to celebrate the work of the lunchtime volunteers.

As part of the national Volunteers’ Week celebration, children from the integrated nursery presented their helpers with decorated thank-you cards and flowers. The school, which caters for the local Jewish community, welcomes Perelle, Rivka, Polly and Sara every week to help serve lunches.

Volunteer co-ordinater Judith DeGroen said: “The support from our dedicated volunteers enables us to ensure the smooth running of the nursery and keep up its high standard.”

Side by Side combines mainstream education with specialist services for 80 pupils. To donate call the office on 020 8211 0901 or visit sidebyside.org.uk.
