Harry Kane’s 76th-minute goal helped Spurs fight back from a goal down to draw 1-1 with West Bromwich Albion, but they are surely out of the title race now

Mauricio Pochettino appeared to concede defeat in the title race already after Tottenham Hotspur dropped more points at home in the Premier League this afternoon.

Going into the game with West Bromwich Albion, Spurs were nine points behind the leaders Manchester City.

A win might have renewed hope Tottenham could enjoy another fine festive period and put the pressure on Pep Guardiola’s side.

But West Brom proved stubborn opponents after Solomon Rondon fourth-minute opener and claimed a deserved 1-1 draw.

Spurs have now dropped points at home to Chelsea, Burnley, Swansea City and the Baggies while they’ve also lost under the arch to rivals West Ham United in the League Cup.

When asked if the gap between Tottenham and Man City was too big, Pochettino, unprompted, addressed the Wembley debate.

He said: “Yes, it’s true the gap is now 10 points and that is massive in the Premier League, but we need to be focused on trying to improve us and on trying to be more consistent here at Wembley and try to win more games here like we did at White Hart Lane.

“It is true it is different to White Hart Lane, but that is our reality and we cannot escape from our reality.

“Our reality is playing here and waiting for our new stadium, but it is not an excuse and the team is doing well and only I’m disappointed because we dropped two points when we wanted to get all three.”

Pochettino acknowledged, after the midweek 2-1 win at Borussia Dortmund, Spurs had put a massive amount of effort into the clash with West Brom.

Going behind so early felt a hammer blow and the Argentine conceded it affected his players, adding: “We feel disappointed.

“I am pleased with the effort after the Dortmund game and we tried different ways to win, but in the moment we conceded the goal, so early in the game, it is true that was a massive hit for us.

“West Brom have more belief in that moment that it was possible to win the game and it is true that we were wrong in the way we tried to find the space and we moved the ball so slow in the first half an hour. Maybe because of how we conceded the goal because it was a massive impact for us.

“But in the last 15 minutes (of the first half) we played much better and moved it better and found better space. In the second half it was very good and the team played very well.

“We created many chances and I am disappointed to drop two points, but from my point of view and from the team’s it is difficult to explain why we didn’t win.”
