Typewriters were a thing of the past as “new technology” was introduced at the Gazette newsroom.

“From now on computers and VDUs will bring you your favourite newspaper,” announced the Gazette.

Meanwhile a jury at St Pancras Coroner’s Court decided Tunay Hassan had died from “a dependency on drugs aggravated by lack of care”.

The 25-year-old heroin addict died in the custody of Dalston police on June 25, 1987. Supporters of the Hassan family’s “campaign for truth” hailed the verdict as a great victory.

Renewed calls were made for an inquiry into the conduct of the Stoke Newington divisional police. Several people had died or been injured in their custody at the time, including Colin Roach and Trevor Monerville. Tunay was arrested with his girlfriend for breaking into a house. She died of a heroin overdose two days later.
