“Eastenders are renowned for droppig their H’s, but whoever painted this sign outside Haggerston School was taking it too far,” the Gazette joked.

The sign outside the school in Weymouth Terrace had been painted incorrectly.

Bright sparks Marcia Rose and Karen Smith – who went to the scool (sorry, school) – scratched their heads for a minute before spotting the “deliberate mistake”. Little had they realised they would be faced with a spelling test before they even stepped through the school gates. “Looks like that painter might need to brush up on his spelling before he takes his paintbrush to any more signs in the borough,” the Gazette pointed out.

n In less jovial news, another victim was killed in the tower block dubbed “Homicide House”. Ron Strongman, 33, died of knife wounds in a flat in Standway Court, Hoxton Street.

He was the third person to be killed there in two years.
