A former Arsenal and Scotland footballer became the licensee at The Greyhound pub in Balls Pond Road.
Inside forward Jimmy Logie took over the boozer after being granted a licence at Old Street Magistrates’ Court. Logie won two First Division titles with Arsenal, as well as an FA Cup – scoring both goals in the final, a 2-0 win over Liverpool in 1950.
Meanwhile, a South Hackney salesman’s reason for setting up a “snowball” lottery was that he didn’t know it was illegal.
A woman in Sunderland had received a document called “Pennies From Heaven” along with four circulars to send on to friends.
In a statement read out in Old Street Magistrates’ Court, defendant Peter Bowyer said: “I received a chain letter. I don’t know who sent it to me. I composed a chain letter on the lines of the one I received and sent 50 sets of five letters to people who had applied for details of a club which I had helped run.”
