Chris Main, 44, sleeps with his dog near Clapton Overground Station in Upper Clapton Road but in the space of one week had his drawings stolen, was kicked in the head and had a bottle thrown at him.

His story went viral after members from the Jewish neighbourhood watch group Shomrim posted what had happened on Twitter and they subsequently set up a crowdfunding page to help him out.

Shomrim member Ben Beigel said: “The money raised from this campaign will help Chris buy new clothing and basic day to day essentials, like food for himself and his dog.

“It will also help Chris buy the relevant material for his artwork, which will help him set up a new life with a brighter future.”

Ben added that Chris has been told he will be in sheltered accommodation within two weeks.
