Tottenham Hotspur 1 Burnley 1: Spurs denied victory by late Chris Wood equaliser for Burnley

Tottenham Hotspur’s wait for a first Premier League win at Wembley goes on after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser in their draw with Burnley.

Despite enjoying much of the ball in the opening 45 minutes, Spurs were unable to do much with it.

Spurs took the lead early in the second half through Dele Alli, but, seemingly on their way to collecting all three points, conceded a stoppage-time equaliser.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino made just one change from last Sunday’s loss at home to Chelsea, with Heung-Min Son replacing Victor Wanyama, who missed out with an injured knee.

Mousa Dembele retained his starting spot from last weekend to make his 200th appearance in all competitions for Spurs.

There was a spot on the bench for defender Davinson Sanchez, who joined in the week from Ajax, and academy product Tashan Oakley-Boothe, with both making their first appearance in a matchday squad for the north Londoners.

After enjoying mich of the ball early on, Tottenham almost fell behind in bizarre fashion in the seventh minute.

Burnley winger Robbie Brady cut in from the left and crossed, but the Irishman’s ball almost caught out home stopper Hugo Lloris, who could only palm it behind for a corner, which came to nothing.

Twelve minutes later, Spurs were awarded a free kick in the opposition half when Dele Alli was fouled by Johan Berg Gudmundsson.

Ben Davies delivered the set piece in delightfully, but Harry Kane was unable to get his header on target as his wait for a Premier League goal in August went on.

With 22 minutes on the clock, a well-worked short corner routine resulted in Christian Eriksen dinking the ball in from the right for Spurs, but Eric Dier headed over from 12 yards.

In the 38th minute, Alli found Davies down the left for Tottenham after showing some quick feet, with the Welshman crossing into the box.

The ball found Kane six yards out, and it looked to all that he would end his August curse, only for Clarets defender James Tarkowski to produce a superb block.

That proved to be the last real piece of goalmouth action in a frustrating opening half for the north Londoners, with neither side able to find the net at Wembley.

However, it took Spurs less than four minutes of the second half to find a breakthrough.

A corner from the right was nodded on by Dier at the near post, with Alli getting a shot away.

The England international’s initial effort was blocked by Burnley defender Matthew Lowton, but Alli was on hand to slam home the rebound from six yards.

The goal seemed to lift Tottenham, with the hosts intent on adding a quick second.

Four minutes after taking the lead, Eriksen laid the ball off the Kane inside the box, but the forward curled wide of the goal.

Kane was involved again in the 62nd minute, leading a Spurs counter-attack down the right, but was unable to pick out Son in the box with his final ball, insteading finding Clarets keeper Tom Heaton.

The north Londoners were given a fright in the 71st minute when a Burnley counter almost ended in Brady finding the net, but a fine save from Lloris at his near post kept the hosts ahead.

Two minutes later, Kane went close again to ending his August hoodoo, with Heaton tipping around the post after the Tottenham forward was found in the box by Davies.

Spurs continued to have chances to double their lead after that, with Eriksen, Kane and Alli among those to test Heaton in the minutes that followed as the hosts searched for a second.

Despite the chances, Spurs nearly conceded an equaliser with seven minutes remaining, only for Lloris to rush out quickly and deny Burnley substitute Chris Wood.

The New Zealand continued to trouble Spurs in the closing moments, testing Lloris with a header before firing wide a couple of moments later.

Despite multiple warnings, Tottenham failed to heed them as Wood netted a stoppage-time equaliser for Burnley.

The striker, recently signed from Leeds United, latched on to a through ball from Brady, tucking the ball past Lloris with his first touch.

The goal was a huge blow for Spurs as their Wembley hoodoo stretches on, leaving Pochettino with plenty to mull over heading into the international break.
