Spurs face lengthy trip to Yeovil on Wednesday looking to claim more success in the Continental Tyres Cup

Wendy Martin says Tottenham Hotspur Ladies’ disappointment of coming from behind to share the spoils in a 1-1 FA Women’s Super League 2 clash against Watford shows they’re a team packed with players who want to win every game.

The Lilywhites fell behind to Adekite Fatuga-Dada’s ferocious 54th-minute volley before Lucia Leon’s skilful back heel kick just past the hour gave Spurs the impetus to look for the win.

And Karen Hills’ side came within a whisker of doing so after Martin sent Sarah Wiltshire through on goal, whose strike hit the inside of the post in stoppage time, but Martin said lessons have been learnt from their slow start and the squad have took heed of their own high standards.

“We’re all really disappointed to be honest, the game plan was to go out there and get the three points,” she said. “We thought we were the better team and especially in the second-half.

“I think it was a bit of a slow start from us, we’re disappointed with our first-half performance because it wasn’t good enough. We set our standards high and in the first-half we didn’t meet the levels that we expect from ourselves.

“When their goal went in we knew we had to step up if we were going to get something out of the game. We did, we pulled together as a team, increased the pace – and it was a really positive response.

“We managed to get back into the game and at the end we could have very easily gone on and won it. We did have some really good chances; we hit the woodwork a number of times and just disappointed not to have come away with the three points.”

The Hornets gave Spurs an opportunity to show they can match their counter-parts physically in what was a feisty contest at Kings Langley.

Martin waxed lyrical about the work that goes on behind-the-scenes to place them in a position which allows their competitive spirit to foster.

She said: “It was another challenge put in front of us and once again we’ve shown we can compete at this level. I think the fact that we’re disappointed shows how ambitious we are and how much we believe in ourselves as a team.

“Every single week is a different challenge, with different lessons to be learnt and I think the girls have shown some real character. The coaches and manager have got some fantastic experience and they always send us out there the best prepared we can be.

“There’s a lot of learning that goes off the pitch as well as on the training ground and we show week in, week out that we put those game plans and those lessons into place.”

In a quick turn-around, Spurs now face the challenge of a midweek trip to Yeovil, for matchday 2 of the Continental Tyres Cup Group Stage.

With having overcome WSL 1 opposition in the opening round, a 2-0 home win over Bristol City, the star forward says the north Londoners showed their mettle and will be bold in their approach as they look for no less than the victory – with Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea on the horizon in Group Two South.

“It’s a long trip on a Wednesday night - we are still part-time players and some of us have full-time jobs,” she added. “We’ve shown that we can compete as we did against Bristol and I think Wednesday will be exactly the same.

“We’ll have a game plan and we’ll go there hopefully able to execute it. We’ve learnt our lessons, we’ll regroup and go again against Yeovil and hopefully come away with the three points there.”
