Mauricio Pochettino says he is hoping for three more signings after adding defender Davinson Sanchez and goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga to his squad.

Last week, when Tottenham were yet to recruit anyone, the Spurs manager stated he was aiming to bring in four players - but he has now revised that figure.

“I said four players before? Ok, one keeper plus four,” he said today. “Maybe three more.

“I am confident [we will sign more players]. We are working hard. We are trying to strengthen the squad and to bring in a few players more. From our chairman Daniel [Levy] and Steve [Hitchen] our chief scout, we are trying to bring in the right profile.

“It is a big effort from the club to strengthen our squad. I think it is so exciting now.

“We have ahead the Premier League and the Champions League, it’s so exciting. We are going to play against the last Champions League winner in Real Madrid, and Borussia Dortmund and Apoel Nicosia.

“We are so motivated and the club is excited too to try to strengthen the squad and be more competitive.”

Spurs fans will be keen to see Sanchez in action, with the 21-year-old centre-back arriving from Ajax for £38.4million and becoming Tottenham’s record signing.

However, it is unclear whether he will be available to make his debut in Sunday’s home match against Burnley.

“The work permit, we are waiting,” said Pochettino.

“We’ll see if he can be available to be selected for the weekend. Today he is still not available to be selected.

“It’s true that in the last week he wasn’t involved in the training sessions in Ajax.

“Always that’s difficult for him. He was training yesterday and before yesterday, and we expect tomorrow he will train with us again. But I can only tell you that we need to wait for the work permit.

“We are very pleased to add Davinson and Paulo Gazzaniga to our squad. I think they fit very well for our club, our squad. When I told you weeks ago that we need to sign, in the end we start to sign players. Of course we wish them all the best.

“[Sanchez’s] price is not my business. The only important thing is to say that he’s so young. He’s 21 years old, he’s one of the most important and talented young players in Europe. He’s so fast, so aggressive. We’re so pleased to sign him and to have him with us.”

Gazzaniga’s arrival has not quite excited Spurs fans in the same way as Sanchez’s, but Pochettino explained: “We need another keeper because we have Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm. I think we have very good keepers in the academy, like Alfie [Whiteman] and Brandon [Austin], but they are still so young.

“The gap with Hugo and Michel was massive. I think Paolo was a perfect profile for us to bring in.

“We know him from our period at Southampton. He was the best keeper last season in the Championship, at Rayo Vallecano in Spain, and I think there’s no doubt about signing him and creating more competition in our goal.”

Pochettino refused to discuss reports that Paris St Germain right-back Serge Aurier could be heading to north London, delivering his stock response: “You know I never speak about rumours.”

However, he admits there are likely to be some departures – and it has already been confirmed today that Cameron Carter-Vickers has joined Sheffield United on loan for the season.

“It’s rumours, but like we need to sign a few players, sure, maybe some players need to leave the club for different reasons,” said the Argentinian.

“It’s true that they need to feel they can play, or they want to play more.

“That is a normal period in every club.”

Asked if Kevin Wimmer could be one of the players to make way, Pochettino replied: “I cannot speak about rumours but you can find the names.

“I don’t need to tell the names.

“You know the players that have not played too much over the last season.

“They want to feel alive and play more, and maybe some clubs can guarantee they can play more next season.”

Meanwhile, Pochettino believes Harry Kane would be a fine England captain if Gareth Southgate decides to hand the armband to the Tottenham striker in the wake of Wayne Rooney’s international retirement.

“That is not my decision, it’s Gareth Southgate’s decision,” said the Spurs boss.

“Only I think Harry Kane is ready - his personality and character is fantastic to be a captain.

“That is not my decision but I am very, very happy if in the end the decision is to give the armband to Harry.”
