A Steven Bergwijn debut goal and another strike from Heung-Min Son inspired Tottenham Hotspur to a 2-0 victory over 10-men Manchester City.

Two second-half strikes from new signing Bergwijn and Son sealed the three points for Spurs that moved them up to fifth in the Premier League at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Head coach Jose Mourinho handed a debut to attacking midfielder Steven Bergwijn who comes in to replace Gedson Fernandes in the starting line-up as the only change from the side that drew with Southampton in the FA Cup.

The visitors City dominated possession in the early proceedings, but it wasn't until the eighth minute when they had their first chances, as midfielder Kevin De Bruyne fired over the crossbar after Riyad Mahrez played the Belgian in from the edge of the box.

In the 14th minute there was a break in play as Dele Alli received treatmetnt following a high tackle from Raheem Sterling that went to VAR for a possible red card but the England International was no penalised.

Both sides searched for chances but couldn't create anything to get in behind their opponents back lines until the 27th minute when Sergio Aguero went close.

The Argentinan wrapped a shot that looked to have just caught the foot of Hugo Lloris round the goalkeeper but off the post and the ball bounced away.

Spurs then almost had a golden chance of their own just eight minutes later as new signing Steven Bergwijn tried to pick out Alli at the back post but Kyle Walker done just enough to clear the danger as he got his head to it.

Moments later Aguero went down inside the box and play resumed with Spurs getting the ball up the pitch.

The ball went out of play and VAR struck once again with a lengthy review eventually awarding City a penalty in the 38th minute.

Ilkay Gundogan stepped up to take the penalty but had his shot denied by Lloris who pushed his shot away, but in came Sterling to try pick up the rebound.

City appealed for another penalty after Sterling went down but it was not given after a VAR check although they did have one more chance before half-time as Aguero hit the side netting from close range in added time.

Four minutes into the second-half great challenge from Japhet Tanganga and a goalline clearance from

Toby Alderweireld prevented City from grabbing the opener.

In the 60th minute Zinchenko was sent off for picking up a second yellow card for bringing down midfielder Harry Winks.

Three minutes later the hosts capitalised on the man advantage as Steven Bergwijn netted on his debut as the Dutch International controlled Lucas Moura's pass on his chest and volleyed into the bottom right corner.

Heung-Min Son then doubled Spurs lead as the attacker took aim from the edge of the box and his shot was deflected past Ederson following a good ball in from substitute Tanguy Ndombele in the 72nd minute.
