Full-back is rewarded for his strong finish to 2016/17 campaign with new deal

Tottenham Hotspur right-back Kieran Trippier has agreed a new contract with the club, which will run until 2022.

The news comes less than a week after Spurs confirmed defender Kyle Walker had joined Manchester City.

After a strong finish to the 2016/17 campaign, Trippier was always expected to sign a contract extension and on Tuesday it was announced.

The 26-year-old joined the club in June 2015 from Burnley and has gone on to make 41 appearances for Tottenham.

Trippier largely found himself as back-up to Walker during his first campaign at Spurs, as he regularly featured in cup competitions.

A similar pattern occurred during the first-half of the 2016/17 season, but the former Manchester City youngster eventually saw his chances increase.

Mauricio Pochettino used the defender in some of Tottenham’s most important games in the final two months of the campaign.

Trippier started the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea in addition to key clashes with Arsenal, West Ham United and Manchester United.

It highlighted his increased worth at White Hart Lane and resulted in the right-back earning an England call-up in June.

And Trippier’s fine finish to the season was rewarded with his international debut during the Three Lions 3-2 defeat to France last month.

With Walker now at City, the onus will be on the former Burnley defender to kick on even more.

Trippier’s immediate competition could be in the form of Kyle Walker-Peters, who enjoyed a fine summer, helping England win the under-20 World Cup.
