Caution was thrown to the wind on Sunday and it treated the supporters’ inside the national stadium to a nine-goal thriller

Tottenham Hotspur closed out the 2017/18 season in true Spurs fashion with a nine-goal thriller as the Lilywhites lived up to the club’s motto of ‘to dare is to do’.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team have been renowned for their defending since his arrival in May 2014, but caution was thrown to the wind on Sunday at home to mid-table Leicester City.

After seven minutes of action at Wembley Stadium it was 1-1 and then six goals were scored between the 47th and 76th minute during a dramatic final day of the season.

Spurs eventually claimed the win and it secured a third-placed finish – an achievement which delighted Pochettino, especially given the club spent the whole year playing away from N17.

He said: “The final game was so exciting. I think it was a crazy game. A lot of emotion, but in the end we achieved the victory and achieved third in the table.

“After Manchester City and Manchester United, I think we are going to realise it was a season to remember.

“To play 38 games away from home, I think we should be very happy to finish third. To play Champions League in our new stadium next season is an amazing achievement.”

Spurs were guaranteed a top-four place heading into the match, after beating Newcastle United 1-0 days earlier, but Claude Puel’s Foxes tried to ruin the hosts chances of a top-three spot.

Jamie Vardy found the net after three minutes, but Harry Kane equalised with seven on the clock.

Leicester retook the lead nine minutes later when Riyad Mahrez smashed in after poor play at the back from Spurs and the goals, for the first half at least, were over for now.

The second period produced a crazy spectacle with Kelechi Iheanacho drilling home from range in the 47th minute and at this point, Tottenham were facing a final-day defeat.

Pochettino’s team quickly got back in the game when youngster Kyle Walker-Peters overlapped and set up Erik Lamela for a tap-in in the 49th minute.

Lamela was involved again with 53 on the clock when his effort deflected off the Foxes defender Christian Fuchs and went in and although that went down as an own-goal, Lamela did get on the scoresheet again on the hour mark.

It was thanks to another cut back from Walker-Peters and the Argentinean showed good composure to complete his brace.

Vardy nearly spoiled the party 13 minutes later with a stunning strike, but Kane’s curler in the 76th minute saw Tottenham claim the win and end in style.

Although the England strikers took a lot of the headlines, Lamela also found the net on two occasions and could be pleased with his last day showing.

There are normally rumours about his future with every passing transfer window, but he appears an important member of Pochettino’s squad.

“It was important for him, a massive motivation,” said the Tottenham boss when asked about Lamela’s goals. “His performance was fantastic and scoring goals again is a massive boost for him.

“Yes, I think he was fantastic and he worked hard every day in a tough season, so to finish in that way, always it’s a massive thing for him.”

It wasn’t enough for Lamela to earn an Argentina call-up to the 2018 World Cup, but he will no doubt benefit from a summer of rest.
