Premier League club triumphed in France at the weekend with Keanan Bennetts winning award and Shayon Harrison scoring four times

Tottenham Hotspur under-23 coach Wayne Burnett paid tribute to the late Ugo Ehiogu after watching his talented players win a European under-21 tournament in France at the weekend.

Spurs topped Group B with three wins from three over PSG (1-0), EA Guingamp (1-0) and FC Lorient (2-0) and made the final as a result.

A 2-2 draw with Standard Liege occurred in the final before Tottenham goalkeeper Jonathan De Bie became the hero by saving the fifth spot-kick in the shoot-out to give Burnett’s side a 5-4 victory.

The former Dagenham boss expressed his delight afterwards, when speaking to the official club website, and paid tribute to Ehiogu, who was the club’s under-23 coach before he passed away in April following a cardiac arrest.

Burnett said: “I’m really pleased for the boys, the staff have also worked incredibly hard, but what we have to remember is that these players have been developed over the years and a special mention should certainly go to Ugo and Matt Wells.

“Justin Cochrane (under-23 Assistant Coach) and I have been with them for the last month or so, but they’ve had a really excellent development programme before we got here. A special mention should go to those two because they’ve been a big part of these players’ development.

“Everyone was mindful of that, we had a minute’s silence in memory of Ugo before the game and I think it’s fitting – the players will have been thinking of him, so it’s a nice moment to lift the trophy.”

Tottenham’s Keanan Bennetts impressed during his time in France and won Player of the Tournament.

Shayon Harrison also caught the eye, scoring in every match including the final against Standard Liege.

The former Yeovil Town loanee netted from the spot in the final with Shilow Tracey also on target, but it finished 2-2, which resulted in penalties being required.

Ryan Loft, Jack Roles, Kazaiah Sterling, Christian Maghoma and Bennetts all found the back of the net with their spot-kicks before De Bie saved Standard’s fifth effort to seal success for Spurs.

Goals from Harrison helped Tottenham defeat PSG and EA Guingamp, while the forward netted alongside Loft in the 2-0 victory over FC Lorient.

It capped an encouraging tournament for all of the Spurs youngsters and the coaching staff, as they continue their preparations for the new campaign.
