The Tottenham Hotspur stars didn’t have it all their own way on Saturday, but managed to claim vital three points

Tottenham Hotspur duo Hugo Lloris and Christian Eriksen started their 2018 World Cup campaigns with victories in Group C at the weekend.

Both France and Denmark kicked-off on Saturday with Les Bleus just about edging past Australia 2-1 and the Danish narrowly defeating Peru 1-0.

Lloris was called into action in the first half with the game goalless when team-mate Corentin Tolisso deflected the ball towards goal, but the Spurs captain got down low to parry wide.

It proved crucial with France taking the lead thanks to an Antoine Griezmann penalty in the 58th minute and although Mile Jedinak equalised four minutes later, an own-goal from Aziz Behich in the 80th minute handed Les Bleus the three points.

The match was Lloris’ 99th for his national team and he will look to make it a 100 on Thursday against Peru.

Eriksen was also able to celebrate a victory, though not without drama as Christian Cueva missed a spot-kick, awarded thanks to Video Assistant Referee (VAR), on the stroke of half time with the game goalless.

After the break Denmark stepped it up and the Spurs playmaker showed his class in the 59th minute by releasing Yussuf Poulsen, who chipped home to score the winner.

Eriksen’s country are next in action on Thursday and they will look to secure another three points which would almost guarantee their place in the knock-out phase.

Fellow Spurs players will get their campaign underway later today when Belgium and England play Panama and Tunisia respectively.

Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Mousa Dembele will hope to be involved in the 4pm kick-off before Tottenham’s Three Lions fivesome of Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Kieran Trippier and Danny Rose will aim to earn selection for the 7pm start.

Elsewhere, Heung-min Son and South Korea begin their Group F campaign with a clash against Sweden at 1pm today.

The Tottenham attacker told the official club website: “Sweden is a very strong team and we need to be ready.

“We are not the same type of players as the other group teams. We need to work more than the other teams. We need to run more than the other teams.”
