Two people were rescued from a fire at a suspected cannabis factory in Amhurst Road on Sunday afternoon.

The pair – a man and a woman - were led to safety by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus, who escorted them down stairs and out the door. The man was treated for smoke inhalation by medics.

Crews were called at 4.20pm and the fire was under control within an hour. Part of the ground floor hallway was damaged.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Cannabis factory fires can be very severe because of the way criminals use unsafe wiring to illegally obtain electricity in order to grow the plants.

“They’re often in top floors or lofts which means when a fire takes hold it spreads, destroying roofs and damaging neighbouring buildings.

“Firefighters can also be exposed to risks when dealing with the fires because of bad wiring and booby traps.

“It’s important people know the key signs and inform police so that they can act swiftly.”
