Unhappy De Beauvoir residents have been told by the council the unsightly container compounds at the corner of Downham Road and Southgate Road are here to stay for at least another two years.
The Hackney Homes’ portacabins on the corner of De Beauvoir Estate have been used by asset management client teams and constructor partners, Mulalleys and Lakehouse, since 2005 for the delivery of the council’s decent homes programme across the borough.
Cllr Rob Chapman raised concerns on behalf of residents, and was told by Alex Jarosy, head of performance and standards, that the two compounds are required at least until the decent homes programme is completed, which should be by the end of 2015.
He continued: “It may be helpful to explain that the two sites do not require planning permission as they are temporary structures and the use of both sites is allowed within the terms of the temporary permitted development.”
If Hackney Homes decides then that the compounds are no longer needed, the former car park will be reinstated.
