Somebody in Hackney has let an eye-watering 1million slip through their fingers – without even knowing it.

A winning ticket for the EuroMillions Millionaire Raffle was bought in the borough ahead of the draw on January 17, but despite a well-publicised campaign to find the lucky winner, nobody ever came forward to claim their fortune.

The deadline to claim the cool 1million passed on Sunday (July 15) and the money – and all the interest it’s earned – will now go to the National Lottery Good Causes charity.

A National Lottery spokesman said: “We tried very hard to find the ticket-holder and it’s a real shame that they have missed out, but there is still one winner – the nation.”

The Hackney Gazette ran several stories urging residents to check if they had ticket number NBJ899770, and the National Lottery even took out spoof “lonely hearts” and “job” adverts in the paper in an attempt to find the hapless owner.
