A community project that takes unwanted furniture, restores it and sells it will open a shop on the Pembury Estate this weekend.

The Loop at Pembury trains volunteers to collect bits that would otherwise be taken to the dump – or fly-tipped – and then spruce them up.

The “upcycling” idea is part of the Repurpose project run by charity Groundwork London in partnership with the London Community Resource Network across five estates in London. It is also supported by Peabody, the North London Waste Authority and Blow Up Media. From Saturday the newly-refurbished hub will be selling the restored pieces, with the money going towards more training.

Groundwork’s Ben Coles said: “The Loop at Pembury has been a huge success, reducing waste, providing affordable furniture and helping residents develop new skills. Now we can build on the great work already being done to get even more of the community involved.”
