A 51-year-old man was “seriously” injured after a van was involved in a collision with two people at a bus stop yesterday (Monday) - and the incident caused severe traffic jams for hours afterwards.

Police and ambulance crews were called just after 4pm to the incident, which happened at the bus stop on Upper Clapton Road, near the junction with Gilda Crescent.

The Jewish ambulance service, Hatzola, also attended and worked alongside the other emergency services to treat the casualties at the scene.

A Hackney Police spokesman told the Gazette a woman was treated for non-serious injuries, while the man’s condition was “serious”.

London Ambulance Service confirmed the man was taken to the Royal London Hospital “on blue lights” with head, shoulder, and hand injuries.

The road was closed for several hours to allow officers from Stoke Newington Community Safety Unit to investigate the incident, and parts of Upper Clapton were gridlocked in the resulting traffic chaos.

The 29-year-old driver of the van was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving. He has been taken to a north London police station where he remains in custody.
