Students at The Urswick School, Paragon Road, marked Armistice Day with a special service on Friday morning.
The students listened to readings, sang hymns and enjoyed musical performances by the school’s choir and string group, before observing a minutes silence as a mark of respect. Rev Al Gordon, the Rector of Hackney, opened and closed the service, while Urswick teacher Richard Aubrey spoke to the students about conflicts other than on the battlefield, how Hackney was affected during bombing raids and the importance of “fighting” for what is right. As the service ended, a group of children processed to St John at Hackney Church where they placed a wreath of poppies at the foot of the cenotaph, as their peers played The Last Post on trumpets. The whole school observed two minutes of silence at 11am as they joined the rest of the country in remembering all those affected by war.
