Residents and traders meet to launch new logo

Residents and traders will be stepping up their campaign to bring a historic Hackney market back to life at an official meeting next week.

The launch of Well Street Traders and Residents Association will take place at 7pm on Monday (November 1) at the Collent Street community hall, South Hackney, with the unveiling of a new logo for Well Street market.

Almost 200 people have joined an online push to save shops in Well Street threatened with closure because of reported rent increases of up to 200 per cent.

The 150-year-old market, once host to Tesco-founder Jack Cohen, has suffered in recent years but residents and shopkeepers are determined to make it a bustling hub once more.

“Times are tough but a good market can make a world of difference to struggling shopkeepers and customers who are looking for bargains,’ said Hackney councillor Ian Rathbone, who has been helping to spearhead the campaign.

“And Well Street is an important centre of community for people to get to know one another and stay in touch.”
