Well Street Market is to be relaunched this year in a bid to boost trade in the street.

The announcement from Cllr Ian Rathbone, secretary of the Well Street Traders and Residents Association (Westra) comes after traders hit out at their charity landlord claiming they were being forced out.

Cllr Rathbone said footfall was rising in the street and told the Gazette the market was set to return this autumn and he was in talks with Hackney Council over plans.

He told the Gazette: “We are working hard with the council to successfully relaunch the market – which an overwhelming majority of residents asked for in a recent community survey – and thereby boost the customers coming to the street and help to regenerate the area.”

The market has been depleted since the daily stalls left in 2008 and now has just one trader who sets up shop on weekends.

The news was welcomed by traders who said their street had essentially become a “parking lot” in recent times.
