White knuckle ride for Hackney pupils

White-knuckled pupils enjoyed a day white water rafting on the same stretch of water that the world’s best athletes will use during the Olympics next year.

Students from Cardinal Pole School, in Kenworthy Road, tackled the fast-flowing rapids at Hertfordshire’s Lee Valley White Water Centre, which is the only London 2012 venue that people can use before the Games.

The event was part of the centre’s Schools Festival.

Speaking after the youngsters, aged 14 to 17, had finished the course, on Wednesday, June 29, PE teacher Monique Pontifex, said: “Today has been an unforgettable experience for all the pupils involved.

“We can’t thank Lee Valley White Water Centre enough for making this all possible and ensuring the day has been so memorable for our students. I am sure they will be talking about this for a long time.”
