When a wide-eyed Ewan Gaffney moved to Hackney from up north seven years ago, he had absolutely no idea what to expect.

So when he saw a Gazette bill poster outside a newsagent’s reading “nowhere left to bury dead”, he felt an understandable sense of apprehension.

It was only when he popped in to pick up the paper and realised it was a “really boring story” – his words – that he saw the humour in it.

Since then, he has developed an affinity with this newspaper and its “black humour” bills that remain something of a tradition to this day.

His decision to publish weekly photos of them, as well as other funny snapshots of Hackney life, has seen him gain thousands of followers on social media under the name Good News Hackney.

And now he’s been approached by crowdfunding platform Unbound about compiling it all into a book.

“I kept seeing funny headlines and developed an unspoken relationship with whoever was writing them [probably legendary news editor Russ Lawrence – ed]. I was living with a computer programmer and he said I should start a blog, so I did.

“The name came into my head because it was always bad news. I did it for a laugh and then one birthday my mate bought me the website address and I started taking more photos of random stuff. You know what it’s like – there’s all kinds of weird s*** in Hackney.

“It snowballed when I got Twitter and began having a go at people I thought were being w***y, and lots of people got into it.

“They started to submit their own pictures and I’ve got about 150 who regularly submit stuff to the blog.

“I’m imagining the book will be a tongue in cheek tour guide with a lot of w***y quotes.”

Ewan needs to raise about £20,000 to get the book published by Unbound, a team of writers, publishers, producers and designers who help people get their books published.

“I couldn’t be arsed to produce it and design it and then be left with a bedroom full of books to flog. But they help raise the money and then help with the designing, the typesetting and the binding too,” added Ewan.
