Spurs may have slipped down the Premier League table at the weekend but their cup final song has hit the top 100 in the charts.

‘Hot Shot Tottenham’ was originally recorded by Chas and Dave ahead of the 1987 FA Cup Final, but five Spurs fans from north-west London – calling themselves Ledley and the Kings – have re-released it.

Benji Dymant, David Marcus, Adam Manson, Adam Nathan and Darryl Taylor updated the lyrics to feature the current squad, and all proceeds from downloads are going to the Tottenham Tribute Trust, which helps members of the Spurs family who have fallen on hard times.

The song entered the UK charts at No91 on Sunday – a lucky number for Spurs, who won the FA Cup in 1991.

“It was only released on Friday so to be in the top 100 after two days is pretty amazing,” said 27-year-old Nathan. “It’s just funny seeing Ledley and the Kings next to Drake, Calvin Harris, Rihanna and Beyonce.

“Hopefully it’s a good omen that we’ve come into the charts at No91. We love the ‘91 song and fingers crossed we get a similar result at Wembley on Sunday.

“The ’87 song was actually the only one that Chas and Dave did where we didn’t win the final, but that’s our favourite one so righting the wrongs of ’87 with Hot Shot Tottenham would be the perfect way to round off the process.

“It’s on youTube but what we really need are people downloading it so we can raise money for a fantastic cause which is close to the hearts of every Spurs fan.

“We’re on Soccer AM on Saturday, hopefully ITV News on Friday and publicity-wise it’s going really well, which is a complete bonus which we weren’t expecting, but it’s nice to see there clearly is some desire for fans’ songs again.”

The original idea came up before Christmas: “In December after we were drawn against Sheffield United we were all talking in the pub,” Nathan recalled.

“Back in 2010 we were driving up and down to away games, and I think I rewrote the squad part of the lyrics. I mentioned it and someone said ‘why don’t we see if we can put something together for this squad?’

“Darryl’s a music lawyer so he got in touch with Chas and Dave and they gave us their blessing and well wishes, which we were really surprised and very pleased to get. I think they’ve worked with the Tottenham Tribute Trust before. The club’s built on so much history that it’s a really nice way to look after those who have played for the club in the past.”

The story has developed quickly since then: “We were in the recording studio early last week, got the song made, sent it off to Spurs and all a sudden we found out the club really liked it and wanted to get us on the pitch and make it their official song, so it’s just been a complete whirlwind,” said Nathan.

“We never expected that the club would take it seriously and actually use, it so that was an amazing moment. They made the video to go with it.”

Nathan admits the group were a little anxious about the reaction when it became clear that their novel idea was going to be the soundtrack for the build-up to Tottenham’s big day at Wembley.

“We were a bit nervous,” he said. “But when we walked out onto the pitch last Thursday [the video was screened at half-time during Spurs’ Europa League clash against Fioretina] it was something we will never forget.

“Everyone clapped us off at the end after they played the song and that was something that will stay with us forever.

“The feedback has been incredible. Everyone has got behind the track and, most importantly, we’re raising some good money for an excellent cause.”

So what’s next for this breakthrough act?

“Either X Factor or The Voice, we’re not particularly picky,” joked Nathan.
