Women will be taking over Well Street when the stalls come back this weekend.

Hackney Council says Saturday’s event is the first time in Britain a street market has been run by an all-female line-up.

The shopping street’s return after the winter break will celebrate International Women’s Day and the centenary of some women getting the right to vote.

It will also aim to get more young women launching start-ups.

In Hackney, 99 per cent of businesses are small to medium enterprises but just 20pc are run by women, and for start-ups that falls to only 6pc.

One of the entrepreneurs taking part is Alison Dunn who runs the Jiggery Pokery Ice Cream Parlour out of a 1950s-style trailer.

Alison launched her own business after difficulty finding work as a single mum.

She said: “Running a family is easily as hard as running a business.

“You can choose something you are going to enjoy that fits in with you – that is the greatest benefit of being your own boss.

“It is important for young women to realise that we live in a world full of opportunity – especially here in Britain in 2018.

“We have to celebrate women entrepreneurs because far too many women believe they are not capable of taking control of their own destiny.”

Well Street traders are hoping to lead by example.

Jo Price is the owner of A G Price Florist, a family-run business that has been in Well Street for more than 60 years.

She said: “Events like this are key to helping the next generation of young women see it’s possible to set up and become a local female-led business.”

Emma Matthews, who was born and brought up in Hackney, runs Hair Lounge in Well Street.

She added: “I’d like to see the next generation of entrepreneurs inspired by events like this.

“We are keen to help more women set up in business and pass on our knowledge to them.”

The council is working with the newly-formed community body the Well Street Traders Alliance to host the event. The alliance was formed after previous group Westra was shut down.

The market runs from 10am to 4pm on the first Saturday of every month. The women’s takeover is this Saturday (March 3)
