A free festival celebrating the West African Yoruba culture takes place this Saturday and Sunday in Clissold Park from 12.30pm to 9pm.
Back in Stoke Newington for its sixth year, the Yoruba Arts Festival is a focal point for the race of people who are loosely linked around the world by geography, language, history and religion.
Yoruba religious beliefs and traditions played a part in early American blues music, rock and roll, hip-hop and rap music, which will all be represented with live music on stage.
There will also be traditional Yoruba Bata drummers, dancers and singers, masquerades, jesters, arts and crafts exhibitions, workshops, children’s activities, fashion stalls and Yoruba cuisine.
The Yorubas and their descendants make up of the largest ethnic minority groups in London. Yoruba religious beliefs, music and traditions are visible even to this day in Brazil, Cuba, Puerto Rico, the US and Argentina.
