A young entrepreneur from Homerton has been recognised by the Prime Minister for his work improving opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds.

Alvin Owusu-Fordwuo, 20, is founder of social enterprise The Advantage Group, which has supported more than 500 youngsters through mentorship schemes and development workshops.

Last week he received the Points of Light award, which is given to someone in the UK every day. In a letter, Theresa May thanked him for his leadership, saying he had shown “remarkable commitment” to his work.

The former Urswick pupil has also recently been selected as an #iwill Ambassador by the #iwill campaign, which aims to get all youngsters into social action by 2020.

Alvin said: “I’ve never won an award before, so it’s crazy to think the first has been awarded to me by the Prime Minister. I’ve had to sacrifice a lot and the impact alone has made it worth it. I hope this will encourage other young people.”
