YOUNGSTERS in three schools will get a helping hand from a group of youths keen to give something back to the community.

Sebright Primary School in Audrey Street, Haggerston, Whitmore Primary School, in Bridport Place, Hoxton, and St Anne’s Catholic Primary School in Shoreditch, will have volunteers helping children thanks to a new scheme given the seal of approval by Boris Johnson.

City Year London, founded in America on the belief that young people can change the world, has recruited young Londoners to work in schools as tutors, mentors and role models.

In return for their commitment, the young people will gain skills, leadership training and a £1,000 Citizen Service Award to help them with future education and employment.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson, whose Mayor’s Fund for London is one of the financial supporters of City Year London, said: “There is nothing more important than developing the skills and improving the employability of young adults in London.

“I am therefore delighted that we are supporting this outstanding volunteering programme which encourages young Londoners to engage with their communities and help increase the academic achievement of school children.”
