Youngsters revelled in den building, gardening, cooking and toasting marshmallows around the fire at some of Hackney’s free outdoor play spaces, as part of a weekend celebrating London’s outdoor spaces.
The charity Hackney Play Association together with Outdoor People, a Hackney-based social enterprise, hosted the Playful Hackney Weekend as part of the Find Your London Festival.
Special sessions were laid on at two of the borough’s long-standing adventure playgrounds in Homerton Grove and Shakespeare Walk, which are both built on former bombsites. Children also tried out woodwork, daredevil swings and zip wires.
Hackney Play director Nicola Butler said: “It was brilliant seeing lots of new families coming along – which is exactly what we were hoping for. Hackney is lucky to have seven adventure playgrounds spread across the borough, offering children fantastic opportunities to play freely, let off steam and make new friends.”
The weekend also saw a free film screening of Project Wild Thing at Homerton Adventure Playground, an award-winning documentary about one man’s journey to understand why his child – and many others – don’t play outdoors nowadays, and what can be done about it.
