Old Streetonians Rugby Club celebrated their 25th anniversary with a club lunch – before smashing UCSOB 60-17 to keep their Herts Middlesex One title hopes very much alive.

Despite having played one game more than rivals Verulamians and London French, Old Street remain top of the table ahead of their final game of the season at Hendon.

And while victory would see their promotion back to London North West Three confirmed, it could also bring title joy as Vees and French face each other in London Colney.

And with the crowd at Hackney Marshes boosted by the number attending the anniversary celebrations, they gave a champions performance against UCSOB, running in 10 tries.

A strong maul, something that has defined Old Street in the second half of the season, allowed Harry Marson to go over for the first try of the game and winger Dougie Lawrence, not long back from a bicep tear, quickly got try number two.

A centre field scrum saw no.8 Daniel Couldridge pick up and feed scrum-half Cal Lynn who sent a grubber kick into the visitor’s 22.

That allowed Josh Parry to chase to the ball down and neatly offload to Fionn Crowley for his first try of the day.

Paddy O’Meara then secured the bonus point with a fourth for Old Street although UCSOB grabbed a well-deserved try of their own just before the break to add to an earlier score.

The hosts though were still in rampant form and opened the second period with an early try.

Again it came from a centre field scrum, with Old Street this time going down the blind side. It had the same outcome though as Crowley scored his second.

Marking his league return for Old Street following working away in India, Oli Smalley got two tries in quick succession using pace and strength on both occasions, along with a selfishly clever dummy for his second.

A good break by the Old Street backs sent Eoin Fitzpatrick over the line and there was a well-deserved try for new centre Neil, his first for the club.

And a merciless Old Street performance was completed by a quick pick and go from prop Conor Osbourne.

There was still time for UCSOB to get a penalty try after a high tackle from Gary Hoban but Old Street picked up the impressive win.

A club spokesman said: “A special thank you should be mentioned to Lynn Hay, who organised all the preliminaries before the game and has put in a huge amount of time and effort to have gotten Old Street to their 25th anniversary.”
