Jonas Eidevall says Arsenal were “very solid” in their 1-0 win over Everton in the Women's Super League on Sunday.

The Gunners put in a dominant performance against the Toffees but Vivianne Miedema’s 24th-minute strike proved to be the difference.

On the performance, Eidevall said “One of the things I was really pleased with is that they set out in a slightly different way than we thought, we had a hard time getting a hold of them in their build-up in the first 20 minutes of the game.

"But together we managed to figure out how we are going to change our structure, after that we were very solid in our pressing. That requires that we have players who are fresh and want to take responsibility and Vivianne is a big part of that."

Asked whether or not he felt comfortable during the match, the Gunners boss added: “It’s different, you feel comfortable if you have nothing to lose from it. Some things we did well, we defended the set-pieces really well, but giving away the set-pieces, we can’t do that.

"It’s the opposition's best opportunity to get crosses in, we need to be more disciplined in how we defend them. We weren’t punished but we need to learn from it.”

On giving Scotland international Jennifer Beattie a starting role in defence, he said: "There are a lot of layers. It was important to me to prioritise our forward-like wide players against their wide players, so my choices were Caitlin Foord and Katie McCabe.

"After that, the other pieces fell into place. But that was important with the way Everton play.”

Captain Leah Williamson and defensive partner Rafaelle Souza returned to the squad following injuries, giving the Gunners a huge boost.

“Both are very important players in our squad. The players that have been playing while they have been away have been playing very, very well," added Eidevall.

"I hope Leah and Rafa feel they are stepping into a strong environment and a strong competition that has increased during their time out. That is beneficial for all of us.”

Speaking about whether or not the game was nervy towards the end, despite Arsenal dominating, the Swede said: “Yes, of course but that is always the case when you don’t score the second goal, that they will throw everything up. You either score the second goal or you have to defend those situations.

"I am a bit disappointed with that part, that we didn’t put the game to rest earlier because we had the chances to do it.

“Some of them were really good saves, some of our finishes weren’t quite good enough."

Arsenal, having hosted Juventus in the UEFA Women's Champions League in midweek, end their 2022 WSL calendar year at Aston Villa on Sunday (4.15pm).
