AFC Stoke Newington are celebrating after securing the title in the Greater London Women’s Football League Division Three North.

The Hackney-based women’s community football club beat Hampstead Development 3-1 in the final game of the season.

The club was only established in 2015 and are in only their second season.

They finished with a record of 11 wins and two draws from their 14 games.

The club’s coach and founder, Ian Bruce, who was earlier this year named Coach of the Year at the Hackney Sports Awards, said: “I’m very proud of the team and their incredible achievement this year. They really deserve their success as they have worked so hard week after week.

“We are still in the quarter-finals of the cup so fingers crossed we can add another trophy to our collection after winning the league and FA People’s Cup (North London) a couple of weeks ago.”

Lottie Kew, AFC Stoke Newington’s goalkeeper, said: “We’re made up to win the league. It’s great to see the hard work put in at training lead to success on the field. The team has really gelled this season and it shows in our results.

“We know the opposition will be tougher next season following our promotion but we’re ready to raise our game and look forward to the challenges continuing next season.”

The team still has at least one more fixture this season, in the Sue Sharples Memorial Trophy, although they will be hoping for two more.

Their quarter-final clash with Baldon Sports will be played on Sunday at 2pm at Hackney Marches.
