The latest news from the local boxing scene

Hackney-born super lightweight Sam Maxwell needed just 42 seconds to beat rival Elvin Perez in Liverpool on Saturday.

Fighting on a Johnney Roye promotion, Maxwell started brightly against his opponent from Nicaragua.

The 29-year-old took Perez by surprise and trapped him on the ropes, forcing referee Phil Thomas to intervene and bring the fight to an early end.

Maxwell maintained his unbeaten record with the win, with six victories from six bouts, with five by way of knockout.

The Hackney-born boxer is next due in action on April 21 in Belfast, when he competes on the undercard of Carl Frampton’s bout against Nonito Donaire.

• Hackney-based trainer James Cook will see one of his charges in action at The O2 on Saturday.

Cook trains Bermondsey welterweight Chris Kongo, who takes on Serge Amboma of Cameroon on a Matchroom promotion.

Dillian Whyte’s heavyweight fight with Lucas Browne headlines the card, while Frank Buglioni defends his British light heavyweight title against Callum Johnson.
