THERE was a double success for Hoxton's Lion Club on last Friday's Broad Street, BC, dinner show staged at the East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf.

It was the first tournament staged by the Stepney based club in many years and proved a huge success.

Both successes for the Lion Club came in the senior novice, where Ian Stacey and Justin Menzie had victories.

Stacey boxing in the 70 kilo category, outpointed Ayodele Williams of the hosts, Broad Street over 3x2 minute rounds, giving a good performance that will boost the Hackney youngster's confidence enormously.

Big-hitting Menzie, boxing in the 74 kilo category, was in action for the first time in 18 months, following repeated shoulder injuries.

Nevertheless, he carried too much ammunition for his opponent in a Hackney derby bout against Umit Kahveci of Crown & Manor BC, knocking out his opponent in the opening round.

It just an eighth bout from Menzie, whose career to date has been blighted by injury, but this powerful showing must send out a firm warning signal to future opponents.

There was a second disappointment for the Hoxton based Crown & Manor club. Their Alex Jankoo, boxed in the senior novice class at 69 kilos, but was stopped in the second round by John Harrison of the Peacock BC.
