Hackney's Larry faces tough task against British number three
Clapton heavyweight Larry Olubamiwo boxes this Saturday night on Frank Warren’s big promotion at the Wembley Arena, where he will face Finchley’s former British heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora.
Both boxers are coming off the back of defeats in their last contests going into the fight.
The Hackney boxer has not been in the ring since February, when he suffered a first-round defeat at the hands of John McDermott.
That defeat has taken him out of the top 10 ratings for boxers in his weight division, and Olubamiwo has slipped to number 14.
In Chisora’s last contest, he lost his British heavyweight belt to Tyson Fury.
Chisora is currently ranked at number three, with Fury at two and former WBA World champion David Haye at one, so the Finchley boxer will start as hot favourite on Saturday night.
However, Olubamiwo, at 6ft 4in and 260lbs, has the speed and strength to knock out anyone on his night.
Six of his 10 wins have come in the first round, with just two defeats from his 12 contests.
Olubamiwo, who boxed as an amateur with Repton BC, only had 11 bouts before turning pro, although he did reach the final of the ABA National Novice super-heavyweight contest, while Chisora won the competition in 2006.
At the top of the bill, Scotland’s Rickie Burns, the WBO World super-featherweight champion, moves up a weight division to lightweight to face Australia’s Michael Katsidis.
The Australian has twice won inside the distance in London against Luton’s Graham Earl and most notably, Kevin Mitchell back in June 2010, in a fight held at West Ham United’s Boleyn Ground, in Upton Park.
On the undercard on the night. George Groves defends his British and Commonwealth super-middleweight title against Liverpool’s Paul Smith,
There is also a Southern Area middleweight title bout between the holder, Gary Bouldon, and Billy Joe Saunders.
Also on the undercard, former Repton BC Frankie Buglioni makes his pro debut.
On the rest of the bill, all meeting selected opponents are Bradley Skeete, George Michael Carmen, Gary Coreoran and Darren Cordona.
Tickets for the night are available from the Wembley Arena box office on 0844 8150815.
