Hackney cyclist Louis Modell claimed two medals at the Sainsbury's 2013 School Games in driving Sheffield rain, before setting his sights on competing in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

The 16-year-old Stoke Newington School & Sixth Form College pupil began with silver in the boy’s crit eliminator behind Ellis Kirkbride.

He then joined forces with Lewis Bulley, Joe Fry and Lewis Stevens to represent England Eastern for the boys’ team trial and they finished over a second ahead of Ulster to scoop gold.

Despite the tricky conditions, Modell revelled in the road race, having found the going a little tougher at the start of the season.

“It feels really good to have won the silver, I’m really pleased,” he said. “I was a part of the breakaway in the race, but breakaways don’t tend to work in youth races so I was quite pleased it did.

“Some of the corners were a bit dodgy with the wet weather so it was quite tough, but it feels really good to have come second.

“I’ve been crashing a lot this season, so it feels really good to have done a strong race. The School Games were really fun.

“They are at the end of the season so everybody is not really tense and you are with all your friends and it is good-quality racing. Some of it is closed road racing, which you don’t get to do normally.”

Modell was making his second straight appearance at the games, having competed at the London Velodrome in May last year.

On that occasion he failed to earn a podium place but, having shone among 1,600 athletes competing across 12 different sports in Sheffield, Modell is hungry for further success.

“I went to the games last year, when they were in London,” he said. “It was really good because we got to ride in the Olympic Velodrome, but this time was obviously outside so it was a bit different.

“I didn’t win any medals last year so it’s nice to win something this time around and my aim is to make the 2020 Olympics.”

The Sainsbury’s 2013 School Games, which is supported by National Lottery funding from Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust, was held in venues across Sheffield from September 12-15. Visit www.2013schoolgames.com for more information.
