Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has praised goalscorer Alex Iwobi but insists he expects more goals and assists from the promising 21-year-old.
The Lagos-born forward notched the Gunners second goal in a comfortable 2-0 win over Brighton that pushes the North Londoners up to fifth place.
But the long-serving French manager is demanding more from the player who hit his sixth Arsenal goal, and his fifth at home. after Nacho Monreal’s first half strike put the North Londoners ahead.
Wenger who marked 21 years in charge of the Premier League giants against the South Coast side at the Emirates on Sunday said of Iwobi: “A player like that must score ten goals. He must as well give between six and ten assists.
“I think Alex Iwobi is the kind of player who helps you get out of pressure by showing good availability. He creates spaces, but what you want of him is final balls and goals as well.”
Reflecting on his 21 years at Arsenal modest Wenger explained how he has survived two decades at one of the world’s biggest clubs, saying: “I’ve kept my focus on the job and in 21 years you have good and bad times.
“Nobody can have 21 years and only fly.
“What I love in the game is to deal with bad moments and to respond.”
When asked if he thinks Arsenal can catch the two Manchester clubs at the top of the table he replied: “It’s too early. It’s very early, seven games played, 31 to go.
“Last year after six games Manchester City were top with 18 points, so let’s not go to quick conclusions.
“It’s a long way to go.”
He also hailed free transfer Sead Kolasinac’s performance in helping the backline to keep a clean sheet, adding: “He is a satisfaction since he arrived here.
“You know why nobody talks about him so much? Because the transfer amount was not excessive.
“What is important is the quality of his performances and I’m very happy with the quality of his performances.”
