Carl Froch is weighing up a possible clash with Joe Calzaghe after grabbing the vacant WBC world super-middleweight title

Carl Froch is weighing up a possible clash with Joe Calzaghe after grabbing the vacant WBC world super-middleweight title after outpointing Canada's Jean Pascal in a Hennessy Sports Promoted-bout.

In what will surely be regarded as one of the best world title fights ever seen in a British ring, Froch overcome stubborn resistence and a cut above his left eye to outmanouvre his awkward opponent in impressive style at the Nottingham Ice Arena.

Froch, who trains under the former British Light-middleweight Robert McCracken at the Real Fight Gym in Curtain Road, Shoreditch, was busy from the opening bell in a contest in which neither boxer stopped throwing punches, with both showing tremendous punch resistence.

After four rounds the two were level on points, but Froch using his southpaw right jab to good effect and enjoying a considerable reach advantage, he seemed to be landing the more effective punches, catching Pascal with hard left hooks.

At times during the bout it looked like Froch was going to drop the Canadian, but he was also forced to absorb some hard right hooks to the head, sustaining a cut which fortunately for him did not open up too much.

From round four onwards Froch seemed to be landing the harder and more accurate punches, and all three judges gave him the fight by scores of 118-110, 117-111 and 116-112. The press at ringside agreed, scoring Froch the winner by about six rounds.

Promoter Mick Hennessy told the Gazette: "Carl has a mandatory defence next against the American Jermaine Taylor. If Taylor turns the offer down then we will try and get Joe Calzaghe."

On the undercard Hennessy Sports' new signing, 19-year-old Wythenshawe fighter Tyson Fury marked his professional debut with an impressive first round win over Hungary's Bela Gyongyosi, dropping his opponent with a left hook the body. The referee stopped the bout after two minutes and 14 seconds of round one.

Hennessy Sports-promoted boxer Danny McIntosh retained his English Light-heavyweight title against Nottingham's Rod Anderton when he knocked him out with a right hook in just 77 seconds.
