Hackney fighter Lucien Reid has signed a professional deal with Matchroom Boxing and will make his debut on a huge night at the O2 Arena in Greenwich on Saturday May 30.

‘Lethal’ Lucien enjoyed a successful amateur career, winning a national junior novice title with Repton ABC before switching to West Ham ABC in 2011, when he reached another junior final and again won a London ABA title.

Reid, from Homerton, won a senior ABA elite 54kg title in 2013, becoming the first boxer from the borough in 15 years to bring back a national senior title since Ian Napa won the light flyweight title in 1998.

Reid lost in the 56kg final last year to Qais Ashfaq from Leeds.

Reid is a proud father to his 20 month-old son with girlfriend Ellie, and is trained by Peter Sims in Essex. He will start life in the professional ranks as a super-bantamweight and promoter Eddie Hearn is expecting big things from the 21-year-old.

Hearn said: “Lucien is a great addition to the Matchroom Boxing team. He is a really exciting talent and very popular in London.

“I am sure he will be a big draw on our shows and what a great bill to make your debut on.”

Reid is the latest addition to a card which also features world title fights for Kevin Mitchell and Lee Selby.

Mitchell challenges Jorge Linares for the WBC lightweight title, Selby faces IBF featherweight king Evgeny Gradovich, and there is also an outing for Olympic heavyweight gold medallist Anthony Joshua, who meets former heavyweight world title challenger Kevin ‘Kingpin’ Johnson.

Hackney Wick light-heavyweight Simon Lewis lost on his return to the ring against Lee Kakow (Belfast Dockers ABC) in Belfast.

Lewis, a senior novice champion with Repton ABC, came through a tough fight only to see his opponent get the decision.

Ohara Davies beat Poland’s Jacek Wylezol on his international debut in Rostock, Germany, recording a points victory.

Davies, from Homerton, dominated the contest from start to finish and after hurting Wylezol in the first round, the Pole opted to fight on the back foot for the remainder of the bout.

Davies did not waste any of his punches and all three judges scored the fight 60-54.

Davies told the Gazette: “This is the first time I’ve been taken six rounds.

“It has been a great experience for me to fight abroad.”
