A disrupted week of training due to Valentine’s Day didn’t stop Old Streetonians Rugby Club feeling the love with a 33-15 win over Old Actonians.

It was the perfect way for Old Street to bounce back from only their second defeat of the season last weekend to London French and keeps them top of Herts Middlesex One.

They started brightly at Hackney Marsh, dominating possession, and only determined defence kept them out.

But Acton couldn’t keep them out forever and on 20 minutes a loose pass was gobbled up by Richie Jermyn for the first score which Eoin Fitzpatrick converted.

However, if there is one chink in the Streetonians’ armour this season, it is the tendency to concede shortly after scoring. This happened again with a converted score just five minutes later, followed very quickly by a penalty which put the visitors ahead.

But Old Street cranked up the heat and sustained pressure led to Will Gilgrass going over before the break.

Fitzpatrick got across the whitewash minutes after the restart with a bullocking run, and he added the conversion for good measure.

A line-out and maul allowed Old Street to go over the line again before both sides saw yellow within minutes of each other.

Three steals on the floor from half-back pairing Cal Lynn and Fitzpatrick allowed Street to gain good territory and they took full advantage with a well-executed try.

A quick flipped pass from Jermyn was taken by full-back Josh Parry to put the win beyond doubt.

It wasn’t the final score of the game as Actonians scored an intercept try of their own but the five points gained by the hosts mean they hold a two-point advantage over Verulamians and four over London French.

The only fly in the ointment is the game in hand held by the London Colney-based side.

Old Streetonians make the long trip up to north Hertfordshire to face Royston on March 4.
