Peter Harrington full of praise after watching team battle back from three goals down to push rivals all the way at the weekend

Sporting Hackney’s unbeaten start to the new Middlesex County Football League Premier Division season came to an end on Saturday when they suffered a 3-2 defeat at home to British Airways.

After their superb win over FC Assyria, Peter Harrington’s team were brought back down to earth with a bang.

Hackney began positively, however, and should have taken the lead when Jake Kennelly rounded the away goalkeeper, but saw his effort cleared off the line by a defender.

Alberto Alonso then hit the crossbar before Steve Cahill failed to make the most of a one-on-one chance, as the game remained goalless.

British Airways made the most of the hosts’ wastefulness in front of goal to stun Hackney during a 15-minute spell.

The visitors scored three times before the end of the first half to come in 3-0 ahead and leave the home side stunned.

After a terrible end to the opening 45 minutes, Hackney made a dreadful start following the restart when Jon Muzzi picked up a second yellow card.

Harrington’s side showed great mettle, however, to battle on and eventually they reduced the arrears in the 78th minute.

Jon Green showed his composure in front of goal by slotting home and seven minutes later it was 3-2 at Hackney Marshes.

Oliver Robertson smashed in after Green had been denied and suddenly the Parrots had a chance of salvaging a point.

It wasn’t to be though, as Sporting Hackney were left to reflect on what might have been had they taken their chances.

Harrington said: “Although British Airways deserved to be in the lead at half time, I thought 3 -0 was a little harsh.

“I cannot fault any player for that second half performance, to score two with ten men and not concede second half really shows the character and quality we have in the squad.

“I am sure that although we are disappointed to lose the game, we will take this second half performance into our cup game at home to Kensington Dragons on Saturday.”
