Hackney businessman wins Four Nations karate masters title

Tony Gray returned home from the British Four Nations Karate Championships with a gold medal at the weekend.

Gray, who runs a busines in Well Street, Hackney, has been competing in karate for 27 years, won in the masters category, after winning all three of his rounds in the event at the Ponds Forge Leisure Centre in Sheffield.

“I am delighted to have won the British title,” said Gray. “I won the English masters back in April of this year, so to add another title is brilliant.

“I used to compete for England and Great Britain. But it feels great to finally hold the English and British titles.”

Last weekend wasn’t the first time that Gray has been among the medals at a karate championship.

In 1996, he won silver at the World Karate Championships held in South Africa, and a year later, he won bronze at the European Championships, while representing Great Britain.
