LEE MacDonald, star of the BBC TV series Grange Hill, is the new patron of Lion Boxing Club, Hoxton, writes CHRIS KEMPSON.

It's hardly surprising as Lee won two national junior titles in 1984 in the Junior ABA Class A category and an NABC Class A crown as well, in the blue and yellow vest of the Lion Club. A car accident forced him to quit the ring.

Nowadays, Lee, 42, occasionally appears in the odd TV show, but combines a busy family life with running a key-cutting business in south London.,

Famous for his role as Zammo Maguire in Grange Hill and a recent contestant on the BBC's Celebrity Scissorhands reality programme, Lee still has strong family connections with the Pitfield Street club through his father Roy, who has served the club in many capacities in over 60 years service with Lion Club.

Lee will have a seat on the club committee as club patron.

Says Lion Club chairman Alan Parry: "Lee is ideal to be our club patron. He is a Lion boy through and through and has maintained a close affection for our club for many years. He is a perfect role model both inside and outside the ring and we feel this appointment will do much to maintain and enhance our club's role in helping many young people find their own identity.

"We are delighted to have Lee on board and he is very pleased to be associated with us.''
